Summer Camp Week 8: Food and Nutrition
This week the children learned about Food and Nutrition. They discovered where their food comes from, and all of the people who help get that food to the stores and to their homes from farmers, to shopkeepers, to distributors. We visited the County Fair to learn about the farms and farm animals in our region, as well as visited Marker-Miller Orchard for an afternoon of peach-picking. We had a fun trip to the Rt. 11 Potato Chip Factory to see the big machines used in transforming just a few ingredients into a tasty snack.
The younger children did lots of food preparation work using their hands, specialized tools, and of course, their taste buds! We even had a blast making our own ice cream! Everyone was a bit more mindful in their food choices as we kept MyPlate in mind.
Every week, our Middle Schoolers are off and about, all over town and northern Virginia. This week they hiked White Oak Canyon, which is a great challenge. Some weeks we hike, sometimes we kayak, canoe, or go horseback riding. On Wednesdays we volunteer at C-CAP. This week we helped pack birthday bags for children in our area. On Thursdays we tend to our own orchard and garden in Markham before hitting the waterpark. Be sure to look for our market table this fall!
